ABOUT
Welcome!
I currently lead the U.S. + Canada Program at the Committee to Protect Journalists, a non-profit press freedom organization. At work I'm usually talking about safety best practices, why shield laws are important, and the challenges journalists face out in the field.
I also write feature stories for CPJ, which you can find here.
CPJ also put out an audio story, which I helped to work on. You can listen here, or on Spotify.
Before CPJ I was a freelance journalist in Ukraine where I covered everything from the annexation of Crimea, to hair markets. I also interviewed Volodymyr Zelensky once when he was just a sitcom star. My work from Ukraine has been featured in Bloomberg Businessweek, Al Jazeera English, The Christian Science Monitor, Mashable.com, and other publications.
In between my stints in Ukraine, I was a reporter for the Associated Press' Moscow bureau. I dialed in to daily calls with Putin's press secretary, updated the wires with news about Syria, and worked features, including one that allowed me to expense a Geiger counter.
I hold a Masters of Science from Columbia School of Journalism and a B.S. in Slavic Languages and Literature from Northwestern University.
